Wairua means sipirt in Maori, the spirit within.
The spirit is being depicted as a taniwha, a feared dragon like beast. The taniwha in this image is based on the New Zealand native reptile, the tuatara.
The tatoos are a Ta Moko, moari tattoo, the same tattoo design that 'tribal' style tattoos are based on.

I used these images by Vishstudio as reference:

This picture is awesome! I like this kind of things, It makes want to look for this myths and traditions :)

How is "Wairua" pronounced? .-. I read as "uairua" because of my language, but there are times when "W" is read as "V" so I sometimes got confused :hmm:

Sorry for the late reply, Wairua is pronouced as why-rou-a. In moari, the 'R' is generally rolled.

Nice work. It's been a while since I've seen an accurate moari tattoo. This art is wonderful. It caught my eye because of the title...

... holy crap.

I like the reflection and the details in the water at the bottom. The water wall on the right seems more detailed than the left, but that may be due to the lighting.

Ah yes, I'm a bit bothered by the results of the water (on the left side) because the waves look a bit like grass. :hmm:

Or maybe I'm just being too picky.

Nice one, I like the idea of basing your depiction of a taniwha on a tuatara.
